RAL 5018 is a blue-green shade with a distinct green inclination, often referred to as "turquoise blue" or "lake blue." When applied to EPDM granules, this color places far higher demands on formulation and process than ordinary color systems. Light and vivid shades of EPDM granules are prone to color migration or fading under prolonged UV exposure, so excellent UV stability and color retention must be built in from the raw material stage. Our RAL 5018 EPDM granules use a peroxide vulcanization system, which improves anti-aging and anti-discoloration performance at the molecular structure level, ensuring that this distinctive blue-green tone maintains visual consistency over the long term in outdoor sports surfaces, recreational areas, and artificial turf systems. Our EPDM granules have excellent property of weather resistance, and more healthy because we use the method of peroxide sulfidation. There is no sulfur in our EPDM granules, hence it doesn't produce sulfides when exposed to sunlight, no pollution to environment, no odor and no harm to human body. We are one of the highest-quality and most cost-effective EPDM granules in China and the world, and we'd like to send free samples for you to test.

Core User Needs and Practical Problems

Customers purchasing RAL 5018 EPDM granules typically face several real and specific concerns.

First, color consistency and batch-to-batch stability. RAL 5018 is an intermediate shade, and subtle deviations toward green or blue are visually obvious. If different batches of granules have color differences, a noticeable "patchwork" effect appears after installation, seriously affecting delivery quality. What users need is for every batch of RAL 5018 to remain highly consistent with the previous batch, rather than requiring color matching anew each time.

Second, outdoor weathering resistance and anti-fading performance. Blue-green shades carry a significantly higher fading risk than black or dark gray granules in regions with strong UV radiation (such as the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa, and southern China). Users do not want surfaces that turn pale and lose their intended design within one or two years of delivery. They need granules that inherently possess sufficient UV stability and antioxidant capacity, rather than relying on post-installation topcoats as a remedy.

Third, odor and environmental compliance. Schools, kindergartens, and community recreational areas are extremely sensitive to odor. Conventional sulfur vulcanization systems may decompose and produce sulfur-containing odors under high temperatures or UV exposure, triggering complaints or even acceptance obstacles. Users need granule products that are odor-free upon opening and aligned with environmental trends.

Fourth, specification adaptability. Different application scenarios have completely different particle size requirements: artificial turf infill requires finer particles, playground safety mats require medium particles, and sports tracks tend toward coarser specifications. Users do not want to source from different suppliers for different projects.

EPDM granules Features

Application Scenarios and Core Advantages

RAL 5018 EPDM granules cover a broad range of applications and are particularly suited to projects with clear color design requirements.

Sports surfaces and artificial turf systems. In athletic tracks, multi-purpose sports courts, and artificial turf infill, EPDM granules provide stable elasticity and anti-slip performance. The blue-green tone of RAL 5018 is often used to create distinctive surface color schemes or as a functional and visually layered infill material in artificial turf systems. The high tensile strength (4–7 MPa) achieved through peroxide vulcanization keeps granules from pulverizing under frequent foot traffic and mechanical friction, reducing surface maintenance frequency.

Playgrounds and recreational mats. Children's activity areas have the strictest requirements for safety and environmental performance. The sulfur-free formulation of RAL 5018 granules reduces the risk of irritating odors at the source, and the stable molecular structure formed by peroxide crosslinking also reduces the release of volatile substances. Meanwhile, the elasticity and cushioning performance of the granules provide a basic safeguard for fall protection, making them suitable for wet-pour safety mats and the surface layer of prefabricated rubber mats.

Durability under different climatic conditions. This point is particularly important for export customers. The peroxide vulcanization system of RAL 5018 granules gives the product a denser crosslinked network, making it resistant to hardening or fading caused by thermo-oxidative aging in hot and humid regions (such as the Middle East and Southeast Asia); in Australia, Africa, and South America with strong UV radiation, the antioxidant and UV-stable performance effectively delays color degradation; in rainy and humid regions of Europe and East Asia, the inherent water resistance and hydrolysis resistance of EPDM ensure stable performance under prolonged immersion or high-humidity conditions. Compared with sulfur-vulcanized products, peroxide-vulcanized EPDM has structural advantages in heat aging resistance and UV resistance, with service life extended by more than three times.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can RAL 5018 granules provide a physical color consistent with the RAL color card?

RAL color cards are coating standards. The coloration of EPDM granules is affected by the rubber base, pigment dispersion, and vulcanization process, and reasonable color differences from paper or paint films exist. We recommend customers use physical samples as the final confirmation basis. We can provide standard RAL 5018 samples or customize according to customer samples, ensuring mass production batches remain consistent with the confirmed sample.

How long will blue-green granules last in strong UV regions without noticeable fading?

Under proper installation and with UV-stable polyurethane adhesive, our peroxide-vulcanized RAL 5018 granules demonstrate significantly better color retention in strong UV environments than conventional sulfur-vulcanized products. Specific lifespan is affected by sunlight intensity, usage frequency, and the adhesive system. We provide free samples for on-site exposure testing to verify suitability with actual data.

Do the granules have an odor? Are they safe for use in schools or indoor venues?

Our EPDM granules use peroxide vulcanization, and the system contains no sulfur components, so they do not decompose to produce sulfide odors under high temperatures or UV exposure. The product has no irritating odor, does not pollute the environment, and is harmless to the human body. For enclosed or semi-enclosed spaces with extremely strict odor requirements, we recommend use with well-ventilated installation conditions and compliant adhesives.

What particle size specifications are supported? Can different sizes be mixed?

Standard particle sizes include 0.5–1.5 mm, 1–3 mm, 1–4 mm, and 2–4 mm, and special specifications can be customized according to application requirements. Different particle sizes can be supplied in combination to match the different process requirements of artificial turf infill, playground mats, or track surfaces. Particle size distribution is controlled through screening, with low dust content, which helps reduce adhesive consumption and improve installation workability.
