South Africa's outdoor environment is demanding—intense UV radiation across the Highveld, heavy seasonal rainfall along the coastal regions, and significant temperature swings between inland winters and summer heat. For outdoor surfacing projects, the durability of the surface material directly determines maintenance costs and long-term performance.

Our EPDM granules are engineered specifically to withstand these conditions. They are sulfur-free, odorless, and designed with a stable molecular structure that resists degradation under prolonged sun exposure and moisture. Unlike sulfur-cured EPDM that can produce sulfides and odors when exposed to UV and heat, our sulfur-free formulation ensures no unpleasant smell and no sulfide byproducts, making it suitable for sensitive applications including playgrounds, schools, and public recreational areas.

Our EPDM granules have excellent property of weather resistance, no odor....and more healthy because there is no sulfur in our EPDM granules, hence It will not produce sulfides when exposed to sunlight. We are one of the highest-quality and most cost-effective EPDM granules in China and the world, we'd like to send free samples for you to test.

As a manufacturer exclusively focused on EPDM granule production—we do not perform installation—we serve clients worldwide who need consistent, specification-driven material for their own projects or resale. South Africa represents a growing market for EPDM granules, particularly in sports flooring and playground surfacing, which together account for the largest application segments in the region.

Core Value: The Real Problems EPDM Granules Solve

From the perspective of buyers and end users, the core value of EPDM granules lies in solving several critical problems that outdoor surface materials face:

Fading. Ordinary rubber granules lose their color rapidly under intense UV exposure, making surfaces look aged and requiring frequent renovation. The saturated backbone structure of EPDM gives it inherent UV stability. In South Africa's high-UV environment, color retention is far superior to alternatives such as SBR.

Cracking and Embrittlement. Rapid temperature changes can cause surface materials to become brittle or soft. EPDM's molecular structure remains stable under both high and low temperature conditions. Laboratory data shows no significant brittle transition at low temperatures down to -20°C to -40°C.

Odor and Environmental Concerns. Traditional sulfur-containing EPDM can decompose and produce sulfide odors under high heat and UV exposure. Our sulfur-free formulation eliminates this issue at the source, making it suitable for schools, kindergartens, residential areas, and other odor-sensitive locations.

Maintenance Costs. Materials with insufficient weather resistance require frequent patching or full replacement. The anti-aging performance of EPDM granules significantly extends surface service life, reducing cost per square meter over the long term.

Design Flexibility. Outdoor projects often require specific colors and particle sizes to match design intent. Standardized granule products struggle to meet diverse design requirements, while custom production enables precise color and specification matching.

Applications

EPDM granules are widely used in outdoor projects and are particularly well-suited for the sports and recreational facilities commonly built in South Africa:

Sports Surfaces. Running tracks, basketball courts, tennis courts, multi-purpose sports areas. Sports flooring is the largest application segment for EPDM granules and holds a leading position in the South African market. The elasticity and anti-slip properties of the granules meet sports safety requirements.

Playground Safety Surfaces. Kindergartens, parks, community playgrounds. EPDM granules mixed with polyurethane binder form a seamless safety surface that can be installed at thicknesses calibrated to fall height requirements. Colored granules can also be used to create graphics and markings, enhancing the visual appeal of the space.

Landscaping and Pathways. Park trails, plaza paving, garden surfaces. The three-dimensional angular appearance and color stability of the granules make them both functional and decorative in outdoor landscapes.

Artificial Turf Infill. Used as elastic infill granules for artificial turf, providing cushioning and support while maintaining color consistency.

Advantages

Weather Resistance and Anti-Aging. The saturated hydrocarbon backbone of EPDM contains no double bonds, giving it inherent resistance to ozone, oxygen, UV radiation, and temperature variation. In hygrothermal aging tests, EPDM demonstrates excellent resistance to heat and moisture aging. Although tensile strength and elongation at break decline somewhat after prolonged exposure, the overall degradation rate is slow and material retention remains within acceptable ranges.

Color Stability. Using high-quality pigments and stabilizer systems, gray scale ratings can reach 4-5 under UVA exposure testing, far exceeding the standard requirement of ≥3. Under South Africa's strong sunlight, color retention is significantly extended.

Elasticity and Tensile Performance. Tensile strength reaches 4-7 MPa, with elongation at break exceeding 500%, providing the material foundation for sports safety. Low-temperature flexibility is good, with no embrittlement under winter low-temperature conditions.

Environmental Safety. The sulfur-free formulation avoids sulfide emissions and odor issues. Materials comply with REACH restrictions on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), suitable for projects with higher environmental standards.

Flame Retardancy. Flame retardant rating reaches Grade 1, suitable for public facilities with fire safety requirements.

Durability Across Different Climates

EPDM's weather resistance advantages manifest differently across climate zones:

South Africa and Similar Climates (High UV, Distinct Wet and Dry Seasons). Intense UV radiation in the Highveld is the greatest challenge for surface materials. EPDM's UV stability directly determines color retention years. Meanwhile, salt spray environments in coastal areas demand chemical stability, and EPDM offers good resistance to polar chemicals.

Middle East and Tropical Regions (Extreme Heat, Intense Sunlight). High temperatures accelerate material aging. EPDM's heat resistance allows it to maintain structural stability even in environments above 70°C, without softening that would affect usage.

Northern Europe and High-Latitude Regions (Low Temperatures, Freeze-Thaw Cycles). Low-temperature embrittlement is the primary risk. EPDM maintains elasticity at temperatures as low as -40°C, suitable for outdoor sports surfaces in cold climates.

Rainy and Humid Regions. Prolonged moisture can lead to hydrolysis and oxidation. EPDM's resistance to heat and moisture aging ensures slow performance degradation under continuous high-humidity conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Will South Africa's UV intensity affect the color life of EPDM granules?

UV radiation intensity in parts of South Africa is high, posing a real challenge to the color stability of surface materials. Our EPDM granules use a sulfur-free peroxide curing system, resulting in a more stable molecular structure. Combined with high-quality UV stabilizers, color retention under prolonged sunlight is significantly better than ordinary sulfur-cured EPDM products. Specific color retention years depend on actual sunlight duration and intensity. We recommend providing usage environment information during the project design phase so we can recommend the most suitable specification.

Will EPDM granules produce odor in high temperatures?

No. Our products use a sulfur-free formulation containing no sulfur components, so they will not decompose to produce sulfides under high heat and UV exposure. Traditional sulfur-cured EPDM may develop a "rubber smell" or sulfur odor after prolonged sun exposure, while sulfur-free EPDM fundamentally eliminates the source of this problem.

South Africa's cities have very different climates. Can your granules adapt?

Yes. The weather resistance of EPDM lies in its broad adaptability to temperature and humidity variation. From the dry heat of the inland plateau to the humid coastal regions, EPDM granules maintain stable physical properties. If the project location has special climate conditions (such as extreme UV or persistent high humidity), we can make targeted adjustments at the formulation level.

What particle sizes do you offer? Can they be customized?

We support multiple standard particle sizes: 0.5-1.5mm, 1-3mm, 1-4mm, 2-4mm, as well as special specifications specified by customers. Different particle sizes suit different applications: finer sizes (0.5-1.5mm) are commonly used for fine surface layers or artificial turf infill; medium sizes (1-3mm, 1-4mm) suit sports surfaces and playgrounds; coarser sizes (2-4mm and above) are used where higher elasticity and drainage performance are required. Particle size can be fully customized to project requirements.

Can colors be customized? What color standards do you support?

Full color customization is supported. We can match colors according to RAL color cards, Pantone color cards, or physical samples provided by customers. Multi-color combination schemes are also supported for creating patterns, markings, or zoning designs. Color consistency is a key focus of our quality control, and each batch undergoes color comparison before shipment.

What is the minimum order quantity? What is the lead time?

Minimum order quantities are flexible and can be negotiated based on order specifications and color schemes. We have a complete production line and stable raw material supply system, allowing rapid scheduling for regular orders. Specific lead time depends on order specifications and quantity, typically delivered within the agreed timeframe after order confirmation. Both full container and LCL shipments are supported to meet different scale procurement needs.

You only produce granules and do not install—what does this mean for buyers?

It means our entire focus is on the quality and consistency of the granules themselves. We do not participate in installation, so we do not compete with our customers (contractors or project owners). Our position is as a material supplier, providing EPDM granule products that meet project specification requirements, with installation completed by the customer or their designated installation team.

What is the main difference between EPDM granules and SBR granules?

The main differences are in raw material and weather resistance. SBR (styrene-butadiene rubber) contains double bonds in its backbone, resulting in weaker resistance to UV and ozone. After prolonged outdoor exposure, it tends to harden, crack, and fade. EPDM's saturated backbone structure gives it significantly better weather resistance than SBR, making it more suitable for outdoor projects requiring color retention and long-term durability. EPDM does cost more than SBR, so the choice depends on specific project requirements and budget.

How can I verify the quality of your granules? Can you provide samples?

We provide free samples for testing. Samples can include the specifications and colors you are interested in, allowing you to evaluate particle size distribution, color, elasticity, and processing performance under actual application conditions. For projects with specific technical requirements, we can also provide relevant test data for reference.
